Automatic lathe with vibration free bar feed - uses small metal balls packed around bar-stock by hydraulic piston to eliminate unbalance

An automatic lathe has a headstock (2) with a central tube (5) through which the bar (8) is fed. Out-of-roundness in the bar creates out-of-balance forces at high rotational speeds and causes vibrations leading to inaccurate work. These out-of-balance forces are eliminated by filling the central tube with small metal balls (12) of the same specific gravity as the metal of the bar. The balls are packed around the bar by hydraulically actuated piston (10) which moves forward as athe bar is pulled through the chuck (4) after the parting off of each completed workpiece.
