The automatic reading or marking of documents of variable thickness requires movable read/write heads and a movable surface against which these heads can work. Documents are passed vertically downwards between a sprung roller (32) and a motor (30) driven roller (25). A micro switch (71) activated by a passing document controls the supply roller motor and also initiates the horizontal closing of the gap between the read/write head (16) and its anvil drum (21). The document is processed then released to be picked up by another motorised roller and carried away. A logic circuit (81) holds the document in place until all necessary data has been read or written on it.
