PURPOSE:To obtain the titled pipe having the smooth inner surface and a low OH group content, by depositing fine quartz glass particles on the outer surface of a high-purity starting quartz glass pipe subjected to the smoothing treatment of the inner and outer surfaces and vitrifying the deposited quartz glass particles while heating. CONSTITUTION:A hole is perforated in the center of a high-purity quartz glass pipe prepared by a vapor-phase axial deposition (VAD) method by an ultrasonic perforator to give a pipelike form, etc. Thereby, a high-purity starting quartz glass pipe 1 is produced and the inner and outer surfaces thereof are smoothed. Fine quartz glass particles are then deposited on the outer surface of the resultant pipe 1 to form a porous quartz glass material 2' and produce a composite material (A'), which is then heat-treated in a high-temperature furnace to transparentize and vitrify the porous quartz glass material 2' and further provide quartz glass material 2. As a result, the aimed composite material (A) is obtained and preferably used in producing a base material for high-quality single-mode optical fibers, etc. |
