PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which is obtained by forming an alumina thin film on the surface of a carrier and is excellent in pressure loss, heat resistance, cleaning resistance and regenerating characteristic, and to provide a method for manufacturing the catalyst. SOLUTION: This catalyst is obtained by coating the surface of every particle of the silicon-containing ceramic carrier with the thin film of alumina containing the oxide of a rare earth metal such as ceria and depositing a catalytically active component on the surface of the thin film. This method for manufacturing the catalyst comprises, for example, heating the silicon-containing ceramic carrier at 1,000-1,500 deg.C to form an oxidized film of silicide, immersing the ceramic carrier thus heated in the solution of an aluminum-containing metallic compound, heating/drying the ceramic carrier thus immersed, heating/calcining the ceramic carrier thus dried at a higher temperature than 300 to 500 deg.C to form an amorphous alumina thin film, immersing the ceramic carrier thus heated/calcined in boiled water of 100 deg.C, drying the ceramic carrier thus immersed, regularly calcining the ceramic carrier thus dried at 500-1,200 deg.C and depositing the active component on the alumina thin film on the surface of the carrier. |
