The rail transport device comprises a cable-driven train unit 1 consisting of two traction vehicles 3, 4, two transport vehicles 7 and two brake vehicles 5, 6. The distance between the traction vehicles 3, 4 which are connected to one another by means of an intermediate cable 2 can be varied. In addition, the rail transport device comprises a driveless train unit 22 consisting of a plurality of trucks 21 with flanged wheels. This train unit 22 is clamped to the traction vehicles 3, 4 with sliding, positive or frictional engagement between drivers 23, 24 of swivelling and/or telescopic design. The two train units 1, 22 can be moved on a three-rail track configuration 10. The central rail 17 serves to control both the driveless train unit 22 and the cable-driven train unit 1. When the cable-driven train unit 1 is travelling alone, a passing-point track section 28 is provided for the driveless train unit 22 to be parked.
