An alloy, in the form of a metallurgical two-component or multi-component system with a miscibility gap (monotectic), is continuously cast and immediately subjected in a continuous run to cooling with a sufficiently high solidification rate to restrict growth of particles of the immiscible metallurgical components such that the particle dimensions are not greater than 1 mu m, preferably in the range of 0.01 to 1 mu m. A foil may be cast for this purpose from the alloy and chilled at a high cooling rate. This foil may then be joined by a method employing laser beams, to a substrate forming the backing for the bearing (Fig. 7, not shown). The alloy may alternatively be cast directly onto a backing substrate in one or more stages (Figs. 3-6, not shown). The substrate may be a composite strip formed by a steel backing and an intermediate layer of a bearing metal having good antiseizure properties. The following metallurgical two-component or multi-component systems with miscibility gap may be used for casting the overlay: AlPb, AlSn, AlBi, AlSb, CrPb, CrSn, MnPb, FePb, CoPb, NiPb, CuPb, and PbZn. <IMAGE>
