METHOD OF MAKING AN INTEGRATED OPTICAL MODE-INDEX ELEMENT

There is disclosed an improved method for making a mode-index optical device on a waveguide. The method is of the type comprising the step of vacuum depositing material through a mask onto the surface of the waveguide to form a built up area of said material on the surface. The improvement is that the mask is moved during the deposition so that the built up area forming the optical element has tapered edges.
