A fault tolerant method of gear selection which initiates a gear selection search (32, 44) in response to a gear upshift (30) or downshift (42) requirement in an attempt to locate a gear that, if used, would result in an engine speed between both upper and lower engine speed limits (36, 38, 40, 52).
