PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently stabilize a hydrogen storage material and to surely seal the occluded hydrogen by subjecting the hydrogen storage material which occludes hydrogen to surface treatment with an oxidizing agent having higher standard oxidation potential than the standard oxidation potential of oxygen. SOLUTION: One or more oxidizing agents selected from solns. of chromium oxide, salt of halogen oxoacid, permanganate and H2 O2 having higher by >=0.7V standard oxidation potential than the oxidation potential of Ni, preferably based on the standard hydrogen electrode is brought into contact with the surface of a hydrogen storage material. For example, by using CrO3 soln., an oxide which is produced on the surface of the hydrogen storage material and inhibits occlusion or emission of hydrogen can be dissolved and removed, and instead, a chromium oxide film can be formed. By the chromium oxide film, hydrogen occluded in the hydrogen occlusion alloy can be sealed in the alloy and prevented from releasing, and the hydrogen storage material can be enough stabilized. When the hydrogen storage material is heated at >=70 deg.C, the oxide film releases oxygen and again changes into activation points for occlusion and emission of hydrogen. |
