摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically activeα-amino acid useful for medicines, etc., in a high efficiency and yield without any special purification operation and coenzyme addition, by making e.g. a culture fluid of a specific kind of microorganism act on a specificα-hydroxy acid. SOLUTION: This optically activeα-amino acid of formula II such as methionine is obtained by making a culture fluid of microorganisms belonging to the genus Arthrobacter or Photobacterium and having the ability to convert hydroxyl group to amino group [e.g. Photobacterium angstum NSSC 1033 (FERM P-16119), microbial cells thereof or a treatment product of the microbial cells act on anα-hydroxy acid of formula I [R is a 1-11C alkyl, 1-11C haloalkyl, 2-11C alkenyl, (substituted) aryl, etc.] (e.g. lactic acid) at 10-40 deg.C and pH 7-9. The Photobacterium angstum NSSC 1033 is a new kind of microorganism.
