A composition for the detection of leaks from a hermetic refrigerant system, such as refrigeration, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, wherein a fluorescent dye or other visible indicator compound is combined wi th a suitable solvent, refrigeration system lubricant and a material suitable t o function as a heat transfer agent or refrigerant in a hermetic system, as a permanent working composition. A method of detecting leaks in the hermetic system, based on the use of the composition, is also disclosed.
