PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound of the compound having a triphenylene skeleton and two or more ether oxygens at the side chains, and useful as a discotheque liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: This new compound is the one of the formula [R1 to R6 are each a side chain constituted of two or more OCH2CH2 or OCH2CH2CH2 segments and having 1-20 (substituted)alkyl group at the terminal], e.g. 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexa(2-hexyloxyethyloxy)triphenylene. The compound of the formula is obtained (i) when R1 to R6 are same (R1=R2=R3=R4=R5=R6=Ra), by reacting 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene with a compound of the formula R1-X (Ra is I, Br or p-toluenesulfonyl) in an amount of six molar times as much as the 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene in the presence of a base, or (ii) when the R1 to R6 are different, for example, R1=R2=R3=Ra, and R4=R5=R6= Rb, the 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene is reacted with the compound of the formula Ra-X in an amount of three molar times as much as the 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene, and further reacting the product with a compound of the formula Rb-X.
