PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counterweight device which can be easily installed on an elevator shaft of a low height, and which is capable of saving elevator shaft installation cost and elevator manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A square frame body 8 is disposed between guide rails 4 provided to stand in an elevator shaft 1, guides 27 are installed on four corners of the frame body 8, and engagement parts 28 facing side surfaces of the frame body 8 are movably engaged with the guide rails 4. An installation body 29 integrally composed of the guide 27 is detachably fastened to an end surface of the frame body 8 in the vertical direction. Protruding size of the guide 27 from the vertical direction end surface of the frame body 8 is thus reduced to set a height of a counterweight 3 low. An upper end position of the guide 27 when the counterweight 3 reaches the uppermost position is thus set low, and a lower end position of the guide 27 when the counterweight reaches the lowest position is set high, thereby the elevator shaft 1 can be set low.
