PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reverse running detection device for vehicle which prevents a vehicle on a travel road from traveling, without obeying the decided traveling direction and prevents the occurrence of situations, such as a head-on collision. SOLUTION: In the reverse running detection device for vehicles, an image sensor picks up image of a plurality of linear displays which are arranged on the road and are different in degrees of luminance, hues and shapes. The arranging method of the linear display is detected, and then it is determined whether a vehicle is traveling in the regular direction or in the reverse direction, from the positional relation of the linear display which is thus obtained.
