PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key device for a vehicle having enhanced vehicle theft prevention performance. SOLUTION: When an ignition knob is turned from a steering rod position to another position, a request signal is transmitted to portable equipment and a first ID is received from the portable equipment. The first ID received is checked against a preregistered ID, and if the first ID coincides with the registered ID, a steering lock mechanism 15 is unlocked and a second ID for permitting actuation of the engine is output. Then an engine control means 16 checks the second ID output with a preregistered ID, and permits actuation of the engine if they are coincident; i.e., different IDs are used and checked with the preregistered IDs during the operation of unlocking a steering lock and during the operation of starting an engine, and the unlocking of the steering lock and actuation of the engine are permitted only when they are coincident. Thus, the theft prevention performance of this electronic key device for a vehicle can be enhanced. |
