PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an optical scanner to be used for a high-speed image forming apparatus and a low-seed image forming apparatus in common without lengthening optical paths of scanning image forming optical systems. SOLUTION: Inside an optical box 9, two light deflectors 5a, 5b each of which uses a rotary polygon mirror are arranged almost opposite to each other near inner walls of both ends of the optical box 9 across first scanning optical systems 6a, 6b, etc. Light beams which are made incident on the rotary polygon mirror of the first light deflector 5a correspond to a photoreceptor 8K and a photoreceptor 8C respectively. Light beams which are made incident on the rotary polygon mirror of the second scanning light deflector 5b correspond to a photoreceptor 8M and a photoreceptor 8Y respectively. A change in spacing of the photoreceptors in a recording paper transmission direction is flexibly dealt with by causing the light deflector 5a by one rotary polygon mirror to deflect light beams corresponding to two photoreceptors.
