PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To design/develop two or more types of light valves different in size by minimumly changing optical components or changing their layout. SOLUTION: The projection type display device has an optical unit 601 that includes the light valves 311, 321, and 331 and a color splitting illumination part 200 for emitting illumination light to the effective illumination ares of the light valves. The light valves 311, 321, and 331 can be exchanged with light valves whose sizes are different from theirs. The disposition and the shape of a condenser lens 221 composing the color splitting illumination part 200 can be altered according to the sizes of the light valves mounted on the optical unit 601.
