<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element with which a liquid crystal display device having high contrast ratios in all directions and having little color shift in oblique directions is attained. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing element is equipped with: a polarizer; a first optical element satisfying inequalities (1) and (2); a second optical element satisfying inequalities (3) and (4); a third optical element satisfying inequalities (5) and (6) sequentially in this order. Inequality (1): 200 nm≤Re[590]≤350 nm, inequality (2): Re[590]>Rth[590], inequality (3): 70 nm≤Re[590]≤210 nm, inequality (4): Re[590]>Rth[590], inequality (5): Re[590]>0 nm, and inequality (6): Re[590]<Rth[590] (where Re[590] and Rth[590] are in-plane retardation of the film and retardation in the film thickness direction at 23°C measured with light of 590 nm wavelength, respectively). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
