The support surface (2) for the ring bearing (4) is provided with a peripheral groove (6) for delivering oil under pressure to the gap between the support surface and bearing. This groove is located near the end of the support surface that first comes into contact with the bearing as it is mounted on the axle (1). The bearing is slid axially along the axle until it abuts against a seal inside the groove, then oil is supplied under pressure so that the bearing adopts the correct position, and then oil pressure is reduced in order for the bearing to grip against the axle support surface. An Independent claim is also included for a method of mounting a ring bearing on the axle. |
