PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stainless steel wire for a spring having excellent coiling characteristic. SOLUTION: A nickel-covered steel wire comprises a core using a high-strength stainless steel wire having the tensile strength of 1,500-3,000 N/mm<SP>2</SP>, and a nickel-plated layer to cover a surface of the core. The nickel-plated layer is composed of a laminar plating structure consisting of a plurality of layers of an inner plated layer and an outer plated layer. The inner plated layer is interposed between the outer plated layer and the core to couple them with each other, and forms a columnar structure extending in the radial direction of the core. The outer plated layer is broken into very small pieces through reduction in diameter associated with the cold working by the drawing.
