PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide photographing equipment capable of highly accurately performing focus adjustment by decreasing time lag when photographing is performed from a live view display state, and to provide a method of controlling the photographing equipment. SOLUTION: The photographing equipment performs contrast AF at first focusing precision when half-pushing of a release button 21 is performed during live view display on a liquid crystal monitor 26; in addition, sets a near distance flag (#246) to 1 when a macro lens is mounted (#242), or a macro mode is set (#243) and a photographing magnification is larger than a prescribed photographing magnification (#245); and receives no fully pushing operation of the release button 21 (#283, #285) until the contrast AF is performed at highly accurate second focusing precision (#277) when the near distance flag is set to 1.
