1,138,143. The elimination of acrolein from acrylonitrile. SOC. EDISON. 18 April, 1966 [4 May, 1965], No. 16950/66. Heading C2C. Raw acrylonitrile containing acrolein as impurity is purified by providing an aqueous solution of the raw acrylonitrile of pH 7À5 to 11, maintaining the solution at 70‹ to 150‹ C. for 1 to 60 minutes, and distilling the solution to obtain purified acrylonitrile. Suitable alkaline substances which may be added to give the required pH are the hydroxides, carbonates and bicarbonates of alkali metals, and they may be added before or after the raw acrylonitrile is dissolved in water. The acrylonitrile may be that obtained by the catalytic reaction of propylene, ammonia and oxygen. |
