A method of manufacturing capacitors consists of forming a capacitor stack from a plurality of thin glass strips 10, 14, 18 separated by thin metallic foils 12, 16 having leads 20 attached thereto disposed within glass covers 22, heating the stack to a temperature of about the softening point of the glass components so that adjacent components adhere, applying fluid pressure to the stack and maintaining the pressure until the stack is hermetically sealed and any air entrapped within the stack is compressed into small spherical bubbles reducing the temperature to below the softening point of the glass components and thereafter removing the pressure. The operation may be carried out by enclosing the capacitor assembly in a pallet designed to compress the capacitor to its required dimensions as soon as it has been heated to softening point, and containing this arrangement inside a pressure furnace into which gas at pressures between 750 p.s.i.g. and 1500 p.s.i.g. is pumped as soon as softening occurs. The effect of this manufacturing process is to reduce the size of air bubbles contained in the finished capacitor structure, thereby minimizing their effect on the capacitor performance. |
