A boring machine for boring a semi - circular bearing, comprises means for holding the bearing, a rotary boring bar mounted with its axis at a small angle to the bearing axis, two axially spaced cutters mounted in the bar, and means for rotating the bar about its axis, and for moving the bar relative to the bearing. The machine comprises a frame 10, a slide 12 movable in a dovetail groove 11 in the frame, by a fluid pressure piston 14, and an electric motor 18, driving a boring bar 20 mounted on the slide. The boring bar has cutters 23, 24, cutter 23 being set at a larger radius than cutter 24, and the bar is rotatably supported in a structure 25, integral with slide 12, and is disposed at an angle A, with respect to the axis of slide 12. In operation, a half-bearing 30 is placed in a holder under bar 20, cutter 23 rotates about a centre 32, and removes material along dotted line 33, Fig. 6. A slide 12 is fed along frame 10, cutter 24 rotates about centre 34, and removes material along arc E. After the faces have been machined the bearing falls on to a conveyer for removal.
