An electron beam strikes perpendicularly against a non-conducting target screen behind which is a solid deformable element. The screen becomes electrostatically charged in accordance with the information conveyed by the electron beam and creates an electrostatic field in the space between the screen and a plane electrical conductor behind the screen. Between the conductor and the screen is a deformable element capable of developing a visual image from the field. The target screen is preferably of polyethylene terephthalate film 0.01 to 0.025 mm, thick, but may be a mica layer 0.005 mm. thick coated on the beam sides with an insulating layer of e.g. MgO. The deformable film is pref. highly transparent and responsive to electric stresses. Polymer layers are preferred and silicone rubber gives good results.
