PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain in high yield L-ribose necessary for e.g. producing nucleoside derivatives having excellent antiviral activity, by isomerization of L-arabinose by the use of a composite catalyst composed of a molybdic acid derivative and a base. SOLUTION: The L-ribose is obtained by isomerization of L-arabinose. Specifically, the objective L-ribose is obtained in high selectivity and yield by the following process: A composite catalyst composed of a molybdenic acid derivative such as molybdic acid, molybdenum trioxide or molybdenum acetylacetonate and 0.1-5 equivalents, based on the molybdic acid derivative, of a base such as pyridine, a lower alkyl-substituted pyridine, pyridine-lower alcohol derivative, pyridine-lower alkyl derivative, quinoline, lower alkyl-substituted quinoline derivative or aliphatic amine, is added to an aqueous solution of L-arabinose followed by agitation under heating at 100 deg.C for 2 h to carry out an isomerization reaction of L-arabinose followed by separating and purifying the reaction product. |
