1,168,153. Independent rear suspension; mounting differential gearing. BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE A.G. 17 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7605/67. Headings B7D and B7H. In a motor vehicle rear suspension including a transverse suspension bearer 7 resiliently attached to the vehicle body 9, a differential housing 2 is supported at its rear end by a transverse auxiliary bearer 10 resiliently connected to the body 9 and at its front end by a torsionally-resilient longitudinal strut 11 connected to the bearer 7 by rubber elements, Figs. 4, 6 (not shown), disposed on either side of a transverse vertical plane 15 containing the vertical axes of annular rubber elements 8 connecting the bearer 7 to the body. Each wheel 4 is carried by a suspension arm 5 which supports the body through a spring 6 and is connected to the bearer 7 by pivots 16, 17 defining an oblique horizontal pivot axis and spaced from the plane 15 by respective distances x, y inversely proportional to the upward and downward forces acting thereon. The axes 19 of each spring 6 lie in a transverse plane which is inclined from the vertical by between five and ten degrees so as to intersect the ground contact points 18 and the horizontal median planes of the arms 5 at points spaced from the axes of the rubber elements 8 by distances a, b in the proportion 0À8-0À9. The auxiliary bearer 10 is supported from the body by rubber elements 13 laterally offset in relation to the axis of the differential input shaft. |
