[Also in Division G6] Thermal insulation for pressure vessels for nuclear reactors, comprises sheets separated by spacer members (which may be integral parts of the sheets) to form interspaces, at least some of the sheets and/or spacer members being of a non-metallic material such as compressed asbestos so that when the insulation is compressed on installation, fluid is unable to pass freely between the sheets and spacer members from one interspace to another. The spacer members may occupy the whole space between the sheets, in which case they are fibrous so as to divide that space into a large number of interspaces. The sheets and spacer members are secured to one another and to the pressure vessel by studs in the latter carrying nuts and, if desired, the nuts may act through cover-plates or strips on the outside of the insulation, and flexible metal plates may be interposed between the cover plates and the insulation or between layers of the insulation. The sheets may be of stainless steel, asbestos (which may be metallized) or sandwiches of the two materials, and the spacer members may be asbestos, ceramic material or, where the sheets are non-metallic, stainless steel. The spacer members may form, a grid and may be of mesh or netting, or may be in the form of bricks or of sheets of uncompressed asbestos, in which ease, ribbed metallic sheets may be used. In one form, the sheets are formed on one or both sides with integral spacing projections. The interspaces may be filled with loose asbestos.
