[Also in Division C5] A liquid, biodegradable, water miscible, surfactant of the formula A-O(R)H, wherein A is a straight chain alkyl group having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms and R is a random mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups, said mixture being from 67 to 80% of the total weight of the surfactant, the weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene groups in said mixture being in the range of from 1À3:1 to 6À8 : 1, is prepared by reacting, on a weight basis, 45 to 68% ethylene oxide, 10 to 35% propylene oxide and 20-33% alcohol. Specified alcohols include, octyl, nonyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, lauryl, palmityl and stearyl alcohols; hydrogenated tallow alcohol and mixtures of alcohols are preferably used. The surfactants may be prepared by adding the oxide mixture to the alcohol in one step or in several steps. In a preferred process either all propylene oxide or a mixture of oxides containing more propylene oxide than ethylene oxide is first condensed with the alcohol, followed by a second step condensation with the oxide mixture to give surfactants represented by the formula A-O-(R<SP>1</SP>)(R<SP>11</SP>)H wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an oxypropylene group or a mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups the weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene in said mixture being less than 1À0, R<SP>11</SP> is a mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups, the weight ratio of these groups being such that their respective total weight ratio in R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> is from 1À3 : 1 to 6À8 :1. |
