[Also in Division F2] A steering transmission system having a plurality of interconnected transmission members between a steering wheel A and at least one road wheel E 1 , E 2 is provided with an hydraulic damping device to prevent both the transmission of shocks from the road wheels to the steering wheel and wheel wobble. As shown, the damping device system is applied to rack-andpinion gearing including a rack 2 connected to a piston-rod 1 which itself forms one of the transmission members. The rod carries a damping piston 5 slidable within a cylinder 11. The piston 5 includes flow passages partially closed by spring-pressed valve discs 7. Gaskets 14 seal liquid within the cylinder 11 secured to the vehicle frame (not shown). Rotation of steering wheel A causes, through pinion 2 and rack 3, axial movement of rod 1, thereby causing liquid to flow from one side of piston 5 to the other through the partially closed passages. The desired damping is determined by the tension of springs 8 which urge discs 7 into contact with the flow passages; the tension is adjustable by internally threaded abutment discs 9. |
