Novel salts of a polymyxin with C 10 -C 24 saturated fatty acids are prepared either by reacting an organic solvent solution of the fatty acid with the free polymyxin base or by mixing together an aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of the fatty acid and an aqueous solution of a mineral acid salt of the polymyxin. Suitable polymyxins are polymyxin A, B, D or E, or Circulin. Methylene chloride may be the organic solvent, the polymyxin being added as a solid, or as a slurry in the solvent; a gel forms and the solvent is evaporated to leave the required salt. The aqueous reaction may be carried out at 40-60‹ C., and the polymyxin salt precipitates and is filtered off. Polymyxin stearate and palmitate are prepared. |
