1,235,591. Dehydrohalogenation process. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 25 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968 (5)], No. 9982/69. Addition to 1,173,359. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Unsaturated halogenated hydrocarbons are obtained in a dehydrohalogenation process in which a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon is contacted with an aqueous solution of an inorganic alkali in the presence of (1) a quaternary phosphonium compound, (2) an amine oxide, (3) a sulphonium compound or (4) a phosphate ester, or (5) a promotor together with at least one of (1), (2) or (3) or with a quaternary ammonium compound. The process may be conducted in the absence of oxygen and/or in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, e.g. phenothiazine, a nitroso compound or an alkyl nitrite. Specified promotors are (a) compounds containing quaternary nitrogen atoms and carboxy or sulpho groups, and (b) phosphate esters. When a quaternary ammonium compound is used it may be formed in situ from the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon and an amine. |
