1294376 Dryers; radiant-heat burners GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 2 April 1970 [2 May 1969] 15643/70 Headings F4G and F4T An apparatus for drying fibrous yarn or fabric in the form of a long element 12 comprises a tower 10, which may be 100 feet tall, with sixteen identical drying units. The element 12 is driven, under tension, from drum 21, through dip 18, which contains a fibre-torubber adhesive, up inside tower 10 along path 12a and down path 12b inside the tower (or path 12 outside) to the drum 25. Inside the tower the heater 31 may be a gas-burner of the mat type fed by gas from inlet 34, it emits infra-red radiation which dries the element 12. Interposed between the heater and the element is a shield 62 composed of slots, as in a venetian blind, which may be rotated to vary the amount of radiation reaching the element. The rotation is controlled, ultimately, by the speed of the element 12 so that when the element is travelling slowly, the shielding effect is great. Additional heat control may comprise the automatic adjustment of the flow of gas to the burners. Air may be drawn from the outside, forced at a variable rate out of nozzles 50, whence it travels at up to 6800 f.p.m., and collected by nozzles 56 its function being to remove, from the surface of element 12, water vapour, volatiles and other products of the hot element which would inhibit the passage of infra-red radiation from the heater to the element. Burners.-The heater 31 (Fig. 4) comprises mat-type gas burners 32, fed with a fuel gas/air mixture, and spacer blocks 33 arranged in frame 30 so that their numbers and distribution may be altered to change the intensity and pattern of the radiation. Fuel gas flows under pressure from main 34 to a zero governor 35a which reduces it to atmospheric pressure and introduces it to the throat of a venturi 35b where it is entrained in an air flow due to blower 35c under the control of butterfly valve 35d which is operated by piston 117p. The heating effect of the burners may also be varied by moving the frame 30 to and from the element 12 by means of piston 115p and by opening and closing the shutters 62 by means of piston 70p. Pistons 117p, 115p and 70p are actuated by valves 105a, 103a and 101a respectively in response to signals from a temperature sensor 107a and an elementspeed sensor comprising follower 109a, governor 109b and switch bank 109. |
