[Also in Division B2] In order to improve the bonding between crystalline polyolefin bodies and a synthetic latex composition containing carboxylated polymers, the polyolefin body is coated with a thin layer, preferably a substantially monomolecular layer of a polyalkylenimine. Polyalkylenimines suitable for use in the invention include polymers of propylenimine, butylenimine, propylethylenimine benzyl ethylenimine and preferably ethylenimine. The polyalkylenimine is preferably applied in the form of a dilute (0.1 to 2.0 wt. %) solution in a volatile solvent, e.g. methanol or t-butyl alcohol which may also contain water. In the example polypropylene yarn is drawn through a vat containing 1.5% by weight of an aqueous concentrate containing 33 wt. % polyethylenimine. The treated yarn is then used to produce carpets. |
