Heading C2C. 2,3,6-Trimethylhydroquinone is prepared by sulphonating 2,3,6-trimethylphenol in an organic solvent which is immiscible with water and is inert to the sulphonating agent to produce 2,3,6- trimethylphenol-4-sulphonic acid; oxidizing said sulphonic acid to trimethylquinone in the aqueous phase in the presence of an organic solvent which is inert to the oxidizing agent, in which said quinone is soluble and said 2,3,6-trimethylhydroquinone is insoluble, and directly reducing said trimethylquinone in aqueous solution to said trimethylhydroquinone. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons are the solvents used. |
