PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound not containing a large amount of chromium oxide in a high selectivity by the use of a safe catalyst having high activity by hydrogenating acetophenone using the specific copper-based catalyst. SOLUTION: (B) Acetophenone is hydrogenated usually at a temp. of 0-200 deg.C, preferably 50-200 deg.C in the presence of (A) a copper-based catalyst containing (A1 ) an alkali metal compound such as an alkali metal (hydrogen)carbonate, nitrate, hydroxide, etc., and (A2 ) nickel [e.g. one obtained by supporting a catalyst having the content of the component A1 in an amount of 0.01-5 wt.% calculated as the alkali metal based on the weight of the catalyst before reduction and the ratio of the component A2 and copper of 0.5/99.5 to 5/95 in the molar ratio of Ni/Cu on a silica carrier in the weight ratio of Cu and the carrier of 20/80 to 90/10]. |
