Glass consists essentially of Li 2 O, B 2 O 3 and V 2 O 5 and optionally CaO and SiO 2 , and has a composition in weight per cent which satisfies the following conditions: and The glass may be prepared by fusing the oxides, or compounds which give the oxides on heating, in an oxidizing atmosphere. Tubes of diameter 7-7À5 mm. may be drawn from the glass and coated on their outer surfaces with an enamel of composition (weight per cent) PbO 77.1, SiO 2 1À5. ZnO 2À0, Al 2 O 3 5.5, B 2 O 3 13.4, CoO 0.5. The tubes may be drawn to 1 mm. diameter, bundled, and drawn again to 1 mm., so that each monofibre had a diameter of 15 Á. The bundles are then heated to fuse the enamel so that the enamel fills the interstices. The hollow fibres are then filled with wax, cut into 2 mm. thick discs, treated with ethanol to remove the wax, and coated with metal on the end surfaces so as to form secondary emission electrodes. |
