The apparatus comprises two crossing deflection bars and a return cylinder one of the bars deflects the incoming fabric which passes over the return cylinder, while the second bar causes redeflection. The two deflection bars and the return cylinder are mounted on a frame which can be moved transversely to the direction in which the fabric is moving. The apparatus has, on both side of the emerging fabric transmitters which act on a control. This moves the frame until the lateral displacement of the sheet is, relative to its inlet position, brought to a predetermined value at the outlet.
