4-Alkoxy-carbonyl-DELTA2-oxazolines are prepd by (a) metallising the alpha-carbon atom of an isocyanide, which has an esterified carboxyl group on its alpha-carbon atom, by a salt of an alkali metal, magnesium, zinc or cadmium and a weak acid, (b) reacting the metallised isocyanide with a carbonyl cpd. in the liquid phase at a temp. at which the formed DELTA2-oxazoline, which is metallised in the 2 position, is stable, and (c) replacing the metal in the DELTA2-oxazoline with hydrogen by treating with a proton-providing agent which simultaneously acts as solvent. Used as intermediates for pesticides and pharmaceuticals.
