Method of operating an ion exchange plant, particularly for the demineralisation of water, using a container in which the ion exchange medium is regenerated in the opposite direction tot he flow of liquid being treated and from time to time is washed while in a fluidised state, in which the mass of exchange agent takes the form of a closed piston or plug in a liquid filled column with a free space left above it, the dimensions of which are such that adequate cleaning of the filter material is secured during washing and that during liquid treatment stage the piston-shaped mass of exchange agent is held immovable in the lower part of the container. The liquid to be purified is passed upwardly through the exchange agent and withdrawn via filter candles immersed vertically in the exchange agent. - The regenerating medium is introduced through these candles during the subsequent regeneration and flows downwards through the exchange agent, while during washing, the wash liquid enters at the bottom and leaves at the top of the container.
