Each electrode in the furnace is held by a clamp that also serves as current feed and is fastened on a flange plate that is, itself, an extension of an annular piston working in an annular hydraulic cylinder that is mounted on a plate that fits on the furnace roof. - The inner well of the cylinder is water-cooled and there is an air space between this and the electrode, closed at top and bottom end by plates. - Thus, the traditional electrode arm and vertical slide are not required, and the operation is just as easy and convenient. - There is less dead wt to be carried and, for maintenance, the whole assembly can be lifted off in one piece. - Conventional power connections are used, and the device is esp. for furnace doing only refining work.
