C 5 represents a single or double bond or a 4α,5α- or 4#,5#-epoxy group and X is CO or CH(α- or #-OR) in which R is H, alkyl, acyl or optionally substituted tetrahydropyranyl, the 5-hydrogen atom when present beingαor # when X is CO, being # when X is CH (α-OR) and beingαwhen X is CH(#-OR) are prepared by epoxidation of the corresponding #<SP>14</SP> compounds; preferably by formation of the halohydrins and dehydrohalogenation of these. If X is CH(α- or #-OR) a #<SP>4</SP> double bond present is also epoxidized. Subsequently a 3-keto group may be reduced, a free 3-OH group may be esterified or etherified (including conversion into a glycoside), or oxidized, an etherified or etherified 3-OH group may be hydrolysed and a #<SP>4</SP> double bond may be reduced or epoxidized. Also, 3-ester and ether groups may be interconverted. The novel steroids are cardiac-active and may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.</p> |
