[Also in Division C5] A lubricating oil system for lubricating internal combustion engines with a mineral lubricating oil and involving the circulation of such oils comprises employing a solids-oil contacting chamber in the oil circulating system, wherein the chamber contains at least one relatively oil-insoluble solid inorganic reducing compound having a cation moiety and an anion moiety wherein at least the anion moiety provides a reducing action and possesses an E‹ oxidation-reduction potential (as defined) greater than -0.8 if measured in an aqueous acid solution and greater than 0 if measured in an aqueous alkaline solution. Suitable compounds include those of sulphur in which the sulphur has a valency of between -2 and +4 inclusive and those of phosphorus in which the phosphorus has a valency between -3 and +4 inclusive. Specific Examples include sulphides, sulphites, dithionites, sulphoxylates, thiosulphites, and thiosulphates; and phosphites, phosphides, hypophosphates, hypophosphites, and pyrophosphites. The most preferred compounds are calcium sulphite, calcium hypophosphite and ferric hypophosphite. |
