In a plant in which a raw sludge feed with inlet and shut-off valve is pumped by a high pressure sludge pump via a heat exchanger to a sludge converter or reactor from which the oxidised sludge passes via a separator to an oxidised sludge storage container, the sludge feed pipe is shut-off and a cold water feed is opened to the pump which is arranged to by-pass the sludge reactor to keep the hot contents of this separator from the rest of the treatment plant, and the cold water stream is passed through the heat exchanger to strip off material deposited therein, and is finally shut off, the sludge feed pipe then being re-opened and the reactor again brought into the treatment circuit.
