Needle selection is achieved in a circular machine by the provision of a jack 7 beneath each needle having an outwardly sprung end 7c containing a butt 7d on its extremity adapted to engage a needle clearing cam 8 when permitted to remain in its projected position from the needle cylinder trick. In front of each jack is positioned a fulcrummed presser member 11 pivoted at 12 and carrying a butt 11b at its lower end which when engaged by a cam 24 prior to a selecting station urges the lower end of the presser member inwardly and simultaneously presses on the jack 7 to urge its butt inwardly away from interaction with the cam 8. The upper ends of the presser members are provided with butts 11a selectively broken away to leave a contrasting arrangement of butts 11a over the whole series of presser members. Adjacent the butts 11a at each selecting station is a 'bank of electro-magnets 15 one at each height of the butts 11a. The electro-magnets are energized under the dictates of a punched film permitting light to influence a corresponding series of photo-electric cells which in turn actuate the electro-magnets. Consequently any electromagnet 15 so energized will cause its magnet to hold the presser members by their butts 11a as the latter engage the magnets after the presser members have been deflected by the cam 24. Those electro-magnets not energized fail to retain the corresponding presser members and the end 7c of the jack 7 is allowed to spring out after the pressers have passed the cam 25 whereupon the butt 7d engages the cam 8 and the corresponding needle is raised to clearing height.
