A magnetic stud fixing device comprises a rectilinear plane polar permanent magnet 1 arranged axially of chamber 3 between the base of the chamber and a thin plane polepiece 6 facing a ferromagnetic member 13, to which the stud is to be affixed. The intervening space 11 is filled with non-magnetic plastic material and bridged by a thin magnetic shunt 12 saturable on magnetization of the PM. A removable inductor comprises coil 15 wound on yoke 19 with handle 20 and legs contacting member 13, while its core and coil rest on non-magnetic spaceplate 18 overlying the magnet chamber 3. On energization of the coil by a single D.C. pulse in one sense the magnet 1 is saturably magnetized to produce attachment, while on energization in the opposed sense it is demagnetized to produce detachment of the stud. The magnet 1 may be cylindrical, toroidal, cubical, or parallelepipedal and the stud assembly may comprise mechanical fixtures.</p> |
