The alumina-containing material may be chlorinated with manganese chloride, to yield manganese oxide for reduction; and the manganese chloride may be the vapour produced in the reduction of aluminium chloride with manganese. Coke, coal or charcoal may be supplied to the reactor to form carbon monoxide which is involved in the chlorination of alumina. The aluminacontaining material may be clay and should be dried before use. Al Cl 3 , CO 2 and excess CO gases may be withdrawn from the reactor and fed to a condenser, where AlCl 3 is condensed, to be re-evaporated and recycled to the reactor.</p> |
