Process for the production of 2-R1 substituted-4- hydroxy-5-R2 substituted -6-hydroxy methyl-pyrimidines having the following general formula: OH ¦ CR2 ANGLE ¦ NC PARALLEL ¦ CC ¦ ANGLE ¦ R1NCH2OH (I) wherein R1 can be an alkyl group, a phenyl group or -H, and wherein R2 can be an alkyl group, a phenyl group or -H. The process includes reacting a 2-R1 substituted -4-hydroxy-5-R2 substituted -6-chloromethyl-pyrimidine having the following general formula: OH ¦ CR2 ANGLE ¦ NC PARALLEL ¦ CC-CH2Cl ¦ ANGLE R1N (II) wherein R1 and R2 are defined as above, with water under reflux at a pH value of 4 to 8.
