The tubular sleeve (12) of the laser system encloses two active lasr media and has hermetic closure elements. Inside the sleeve are mounted two discharge tubes (16, 18) coaxially aligned with each other. Adjacent one end of each discharge tube is mounted an electrode. An electrostatic potential can be applied between the two electrodes, which maintains a discharge current between the two discharge tubes. In this manner the first laser medium generates a laser beam with a single wavelength, while the other medium generates a second laser beam with at least one wavelength. The two laser beams are combined into a single laser output signal with a number of wavelengths. An adjustable voltage source (54) is preferably used for the application of the electrostatic potential.
