The corrugations run vertically or near vertically in the electrolyser, and neighbouring electrodes are separated by a diaphragm supported by the corrugations. The coolant fluid, e.g. vaseline oil or demineralised water, is pref. sprayed on to the projecting parts of the electrodes by spray bars, the liq. being collected, cooled and returned to the spray bars repeatedly. Alternatively, the electrolyser is immersed in a tank of the coolant liq., which then flows over the projections by natural convection. The edges of the electrodes are uncorrugated and are clamed in a stack by insulating frames, formed of fluorinated resin, e.g. P.T.F.E. The electrolyser is used in the high pressure formation of hydrogen from aq. solns. e.g. potash. The use of pre-electrodes fixed to the plates, as is conventional, is unnecessary and thus the size of the electrolyser for a given output can be reduced, the conventional nickel-plated electrodes can be replaced by thin solid nickel plates. The ohmic losses associated with the pre-electrodes and their connections to the main electrodes are avoided.
|
